WEBER STATE WOMEN'S STUDIES NEWSLETTER
VOL. V, NO. 3 NOVEMBER 1998 COORDINATOR=S CORNER Joining similar programs from around the world, Weber State Women=s Studies and Performing Arts are cooperating to produce a 900th birthday celebration for medieval abbess, composer, author, visionary, artist, and theologian, Hildegard von Bingen. The Birthday Party festivities will occur on Tuesday, 10 November, from noon -2 PM. Kathryn MacKay, Caril Jennings, and Diane Krantz will introduce Hildegard, reviewing the significance of her life and work for the development of the arts and for the advancement of women. Mark Henderson will lecture on Hildegard=s music and will lead the concert choir in performing some of the pieces Hildegard wrote for her nuns. A slide show and lecture will present images that Hildegard created to express her visions. Please come and support Women=s Studies, for all or a part of the program. A number of Women=s Studies students and faculty have responded to the call for participants in the June 1998 National Women=s Studies Association meeting in Albuquerque, NM. Abstracts of proposed persentations are due November 16 in the association headquarters. If you think you=d like to go and to present a paper, we would be pleased to help as needed with your abstracts. For those of you net-surfers, the following websites have useful information for women=s issues: www.lwv.org (league of women voters); www.aauw.org, Aissues@, Atwo-minute activist@; www.umich.edu/~cew (Center for the Education of Women). The new Women's Studies brochures are finished; we are very excited about the fine work done by Barbara Bernstein and Stacey Campbell with financial assistance from Richard Ulibarri. If you would like one (or more, for classes), call or visit the office. FACULTY PROFILE It is our great pleasure this month to introduce Dr. Patti Cost, Assistant Professor of Health Education in the HP2 (a.k.a. Health Promotion and Human Performance) Department. Patti enthusiastically took over the teaching of Women=s Health Issues, a very popular cross-listed course, last year right after coming to Weber State. She brings to the classroom the benefits of professional training in several disciplines, holding a nursing degree from Kapiolani Community College (Honolulu, HI), a B.S. in Physical Education and an M.S. in Exercise Science (both with honors) from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, and a Ph.D. in Health Education from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Patti oversees adjunct faculty for her department and participates on M.Ed. committees, among other things. She is also a core faculty member for OB/GYN at McKay-Dee Hospital, providing training on sexual dysfunction to family practice interns and residents residents. Patti has a wealth of experience in both clinical and educational settings prior to her appointment at Weber State. She has been a hospital staff nurse in Hawaii, a physician=s office manager/anesthesia assistant and a YMCA fitness instructor in Delaware, a university lecturer/graduate teaching assistant (S.I.U.) and a wellness educator/fitness director in Illinois, as well as a program developer/grant writer for Kaiser Hospital and a resource teacher for the State Department of Education, again in Hawaii. She has presented her research on strategies for teaching health issues to regional and national professional audiences, and she has also given lectures and workshops to local business and community groups. She has published in a professional journal as well as authoring several brochures and a training manual, and she served as co-principal investigator on two research grants. Patti maintains her membership in related professional organizations and holds certification as a bereavement counselor, cardiac care instructor and health education specialist. She has been recognized with several academic awards for her scholarship and teaching. In addition, she is active in service to the campus and community at large. Patti=s Ahobbies@ include Ameeting new people, walks on the beach and most water sports@. She enjoys spending time with her family, which includes a parrot and two dogs at home, a son, Matthew Napili Maka=oiokamoana Kala=i Cost (there seems to be a small Hawaiian influence there), in college, and two sisters and her mom in Loveland, CO. She also loves to Aski, hike and eat Italian food.@ We welcome Patti as a member of the extended Women=s Studies faculty family, and we hope to have increased opportunities to work together in the future. * * * * * WSSA will continue its monthly presentations by sponsoring a panel discussion, APolygamy in Utah: Feminist, Legal, Historical, Personal, and Psychological Perspectives,@ to be held at 4 PM on 27 October in the Student Union Building Lair. Panelists include Drs. Thom Kuehls, Frank Guliuzza, Kathryn MacKay, Becky Johns, and Maria Parrilla-Vazquez de Kokal. Please join us for what will undoubtedly be a stimulating and enlightening afternoon. Thanks to those of you, especially the students, who have taken the time to attend the first two videos in what is a very engaging series on AWomen and Religion: Seeking Power in the Sacred.@ Showings continue on Wednesdays at 1 PM, usually in SU352 (see calendar), until 18 November.
