NOVEMBER 1994

COORDINATOR'S CORNER

This month our faculty profile features Dr. Kathryn MacKay, the first coordinator of the Women's Studies program and a faculty member dedicated to providing the best possible learning and growing experience for all her students, in Women's Studies as well as other programs. Those of us in the program now have benefited immeasurably from her continuing efforts and creativity. She has contributed time, money and ideas over the years that the program was in its developing stages and we would offer her, once again, our deepest gratitude.

One of the arenas in which Kathryn continues to serve the program is as advisor for the student group, "Broomstick," which is gathering momentum with its plans for the year. Membership is open to all interested students. Women's Studies minors, in particular, are urged to join, contribute ideas, and take advantage of the activities designed to supplement formal coursework with opportunities that broaden the learning environment to include the entire campus and community. In past years,"Broomstick" has sponsored lectures by well-known scholars active in feminist research today in addition to hosting social activities. This year the group will become a W.S.U. registered organization and the coordinators, Natasha Kap and Jackie Bell, have planned a major event for each quarter. The autumn quarter activity is a quilting project to be held in the Sage Room of the Education Building on 30 November at 6:00 p.m. Participants will complete some quilts, begun last year, to be donated to Ogden's Y.C.C. Winter quarter's major event will be a poetry reading and contest in memory of Dr. Lee McKenzie, a long-time supporter of Women's Studies, whose untimely death many of us still struggle to accept. Proceeds from entry fees will be used to purchase a book for the American women's poetry section in the library. Spring quarter's activity will be a Mayday celebration featuring booths with items and information from women-owned local business. Please join with other students and faculty in making these events successful!
