Schedule: Spring

Course Goals:
a) To explore, experiment, fabricate and gain significant skills as an individual sculptor and collectively as a group of sculptors.
b) To promote reading, lecture, research and discourse as tools to developing advanced conceptual techniques.
c) Produce advanced level sculpture consisting of installations, conceptual or mixed media sculptures that are fully developed.

Methodology:
This is an intermediate/advanced sculpture course. Students are expected to have experience in both 2-D and 3-D art forms. Students will often work large. The class will have an experimental atmosphere of learning. Discussion, lecture and discourse will take place each class period. There will be a designated amount of sculpture projects that must be completed to receive a grade in the class. The class will meet once a week, on Tuesdays from 8:00-11:15pm. The remaining hours of the class will be open lab time. The students must keep a log of their hours. The log will be turned in at mid-term and at finals. If the student does not have a log, they will not pass the course at the end of the semester. Each student must have a minimum of 100 hours on their log form in addition to class time on Tuesdays.

Class Participation: Interaction, enthusiasm and “hands-on” learning is an important aspect of the class. Students are expected to fully participate. Students must come to prepared and able to engage in discussion and critique.

Projects: All projects are due on the due date. If a student is absent, they must turn it in the following class they attend. Please exchange phone numbers with fellow students so you can get the assignment and work on it before you come back. You may store projects in designated areas all at your own risk. Safekeeping of projects is your responsibility. There will be no exceptions made for lost or damaged projects.

Attendance: 2 excused absences, no exceptions. Grade will drop one full grade for each absence after that. Students do not need to discuss with the instructor when they miss or why. Attendance will not be adjusted at the end of the semester.

Arriving late, leaving early: Please be on time. Continually arriving late and leaving early will affect your grade. Not participating, not having materials, not working in the lab after hours, not being prepared, turning in poorly developed or weak sculptures on the due dates will lower your grade.

Grading: sculpture projects: 80 pts
Attendance and class participation: 20 pts
Total amount of points possible for class: 100 pts
91-100 pts. = A
81-90 pts. = B
71-80 pts. = C
61-70 pts. = D
51-60 pts. = E

Final: We will meet on the scheduled final day for class discussion and critique.

Safety and Clothing: Wear shoes that are closed, no sandals or open-toed shoes allowed; work boots are optional. Wear clothing you are not concerned about getting dirty, and appropriate safety wear when required for specific projects. Announcements will be made when students need specific clothing or safety equipment.

Materials: Some materials will be provided for the class, other materials will be purchased by the student and brought to class. These will be announced.

Tools: Limited hand tools are provided for student use. If students wish they may bring their own tools back and forth to class to use. All shop tools are available for student use. Shop safety will be reviewed at the beginning and at the end of the semester.

Attached Class Schedule: This is a tentative class schedule and may be subject to change during the semester.

University Policy: Any student requiring accomations or services due to a disability must contact Services for Students with disabilities (SSD) in room 181 of the Student Service Center. SSD can also arrange to provide course materials (including syllabus) in alternative formats if necessary.
