ACADEMIC PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

 
Course Description:
This course is designed for undergraduate, pre-medical and medical students. Medical professionals interested in first-hand experience with tropical diseases are encouraged to participate. This course is a short course, only one week, and will be intensive. The course is designed to give students an awareness of worldwide healthcare needs and provide a practical educational experience.
 
39 Hours Didactic Lectures: Traditional lecture format given in 1 hour blocks for 2 hours each morning and 1.5 hour blocks in the afternoon.
28 Hours - Lecture
7 Hours - Roundtable (multiple presenters give sequential, presentations on specific topics with ensuing discussion).
4 Hours - Case Conferences (Written case protocol is presented by faculty members who lead a discussion of differential diagnosis and diagnostic workup).
17 Hours Diagnostic Laboratory Course: Par of each day's laboratory block consists of didactic presentation pertaining to helminthology, protozology, bacteriology, or mycology.
15 Hours Out-patient Clinic and Ward Rounds: 2.5 hours each day performing ward rounds in either an outpatient clinic or at a subspecialty clinic. Clinical exposure is observational, interactive and in small groups. Each participant will experience each tropical subspecialty, observing highly illustrative patients. Students will have access to advanced diagnostics to assist in confirmation rather than presumption only.
3 Hours Lunchtime Tutorials
4 Hours Special Activities: Nighttime field entomology.

Travel Details: Delta airline is the major airline carrier.
LAN is the major Peru airline in country.

 
Housing arrangements: Students stay at the Iquitos Hotel El Dorado.
 
Additional Program Activities:  Free time is available in the evenings.
 
Selection criteria:  Students must be enrolled as full-time participants in the Costa Rica 2005 Study Abroad Program in order to qualify as a participant.  If under age 18, participant must have consent from his/her parents.
