Performance Opportunities


In our dance program, you will learn the art and science of movement, expressing every human emotion and awakening the same feelings in an audience.

The Primary Goals

of the Dance area in the Department of Performing Arts are:
  1. To develop aesthetically aware and artistically discriminating citizens;
  2. To promote cultural understanding of ourselves and others through the study of dance;
  3. To encourage appreciation of dance through critical thinking.
  4. To engage the community in a range of dance experiences;
  5. To foster an understanding of and engagement in the creative process through dance performance, improvisation, choreography, pedagogical studies, technology, and collaborative endeavors;
  6. To provide the guidance, class work, and experience necessary to prepare teachers, performing artists, and scholars;
  7. To prepare students for careers or advanced study that require creativity, collaboration, and an understanding of the human experience as explored in the study of dance;
  8. To provide rigorous dance training.

Degrees, Majors, and Minors

Dance majors follow a program based on growth beginning with foundational theory courses, technique courses appropriate to each dancer's ability, and a culminating senior project.

The Following Degrees are offered in the Dance Program: Two departmental minors are offered: Dance performance and choreography minors follow a program that provides for study in technique, creative and theoretical coursework. A minimum of eighteen (18) credit hours (GPA of 2.25 or better) must be completed in the Dance Area courses.

Dance Teaching minors must complete a minimum of eighteen (18) credit hours (GPA of 2.25 or better) from the Dance Area courses. This program is comprised of a dance teaching core (8 hours), dance history, technique in ballet and modern dance, additional dance forms and creative work.

In addition, teaching minors seeking secondary certification must satisfy all requirements for the Licensure Program as outlined by the Jerry and Vickie Moyes College of Education (including a minimum GPA of 3.0 for admission to the Education Program).

Dance teaching minors are strongly encouraged to select teaching majors in subject areas that are needed in Utah secondary schools.

Scholarships

The following scholarships are available to students in the dance program.

You must complete the WSU Scholarship Application form is to qualify for the following scholarships. This application is available at the Scholarship Office, located in the Shepherd Union Building Room 101, or online at www.weber.edu/scholarships. Additional application forms may be required; contact the Department of Performing Arts (801-626-6437) for more information.

Dance Area Scholarship

Patti O'Neal Scholarship

This scholarship is funded in memory of Patti O'Neal, who was a member of the WSU dance faculty. She left this earth after a valiant fight with cancer and will be remembered.

Department of Performing Arts Scholarships


John A. & Telitha E . Lindquist Scholarship for Creative Arts

This award was created to enhance and enrich the social, cultural and artistic climate of the university community by funding scholarships and fellowships that support creative and artistic efforts by WSU students and faculty.

Sophie Wetherell Reed Scholarship

Sophie Wetherell Reed was the premier dance teacher in Weber County for many years and taught hundreds of students. She also had a love for drama as well as for music. Her daughter, Sophie Reed Richards, established this scholarship in memory of her mother. Richards passed away in 1997, not long after graduating from WSU at the age of 70.

Anya Kenley Scholarship

This award was established by Julie Kenley in remembrance of her daughter, Anya, who was 16 years old when she died of lymphoma. Anya was an accomplished dancer, musician and writer. She rejoiced in the arts. Had she lived, she would have been both an artist and a patron of the arts. She wished that her opportunity not be lost but passed on to other earnest students.

Performance Opportunities

Orchesis Dance Theatre

provides performance and production opportunities for qualified students and community members who demonstrate technical abilities in dance. The company's activities include on-campus and dance festival concerts. Its repertoire consists of traditional and experimental modern dances, contemporary ballets, and theatrical and performance works choreographed/directed by dance faculty, students, and well-known artists. Auditions are required for performances sponsored by Orchesis.

Weber State Moving Company, Dance History Project, and World Dance and Music Project provide further performance and production opportunities. Significant dance works and lecture demonstrations are performed in the public schools and for campus and community organizations.
