Student Learning Outcomes List
English Major and Minor students should emerge
from their courses of study with the following knowledge and skills:
Knowledge:
- be acquainted with various facets of both the traditional
and the emerging canons;
- have an historical knowledge of selected literary periods;
- recognize and appreciate a range of rhetorical strategies
and theories;
- understand the basic nature of language, its structure, and
its uses;
- be familiar with a range of critical approaches and their
applications in literary study.
Skills:
- write competently and confidently in a range of
rhetorical and expressive genres;
- command effective research skills, in both print and
non-print sources;
- approach literary texts critically, analytically, and
appreciatively;
- control the conventions of standard written English;
- demonstrate good oral and presentation skills.
In addition, English Majors with a Technical Writing
Emphasis will be able to:
- communicate scientific and/or technical information
effectively through writing;
- read a scientific and/or technical document analytically
and objectively;
- know proper editing skills;
- communicate and work effectively in a team;
- have a working knowledge of business documents and design;
- demonstrate use of computer technologies in written, oral
and visual communication.
In addition, English Teaching Majors and Minors will be able to:
- demonstrate skills and knowledge of methods and theories
for teaching writing;
- demonstrate skills and knowledge of methods and theories
for teaching literature;
- demonstrate a knowledge of the writing process;
- demonstrate an acquaintance and working knowledge of
resources for teachers of English/Language Arts;
- demonstrate an understanding of the influence of media and
technology in contemporary culture;
- demonstrate a knowledge of the field of Adolescent
Literature;
- demonstrate a knowledge of the concepts of multicultural
approaches to teaching literature.
Students completing the Writing Program should be
fluent writers and editors through their knowledge and use of:
- rhetorical strategies;
- analytical skills;
- research skills with both print and non-print materials;
- standard English usage;
- a working knowledge of their own writing processes.
Upon graduation, English Majors and Minors, Technical
Writing Students, English Teaching Majors and Minors will demonstrate
significant progress in developing the following values:
- a commitment to life-long reading and learning;
- appreciation of the contributions of diverse groups to the
literary and intellectual heritage of our society;
- appreciation for the richness of intellectual inquiry
enhanced by awareness of differing points of views;
- appreciation that English follows the Liberal Arts
tradition which is based on the notion, that, in a world of ideas, a person
is not free or liberated from the bonds of ignorance if he/she makes
decisions based upon closed-minded habits, prejudices, or unconscious
emotions that preclude critical thinking;
- commitment to the development of a culture that does not
disparage others on the basis of an individual's or group's ethnicity,
religion, sexual orientation, marital status, age or disability;
- an appreciation of the contribution that clear, analytical
thinking makes to the maintenance and enlightenment of our society.
