Results of Assessment

2006-2007 (submitted 11/20/07)

During 2006/07, the Telecommunications and Business Education (TBE) faculty completed the following goals from the 2005/06 assessment:

  • TBE 2080 (databases) and TBE 3090 (presentations) were added to the required courses for Business Education majors.  This change was based upon reducing seven credits from the College of Education requirements, which changed from three levels to two levels (College of Education Core and Student Teaching.)
  • Multimedia research was gathered and will be reviewed during this year.

During the year 2006/07, the Telecommunications and Business Education (TBE) faculty reviewed the exit interviews, internship/practicum evaluations, student teaching evaluations, and advisory committee recommendations.  These assessment tools were used to evaluate the nine outcomes for TBE.  Also, several goals were continued from last year’s assessment.  Outcomes 3, 5, 8, and 9 were targeted as the areas needing revision.  Based on these assessment tools, the following goals were suggested for 2007/08:

Overall Department Goal

Based on input from graduating students and faculty, the following goals were set:

  1. Conduct an online survey for the Telecommunications graduates
  2. Conduct an online survey for Business Systems graduates
  3. Conduct an online survey for Business Education graduates
  4. Review current outcomes and assessments and consider revisions
  5. Consider renaming Business Systems Major to include Multimedia
  6. Revise Business Education Major to major include new Educ 1010 course
  7. Revise Telecommunication Major to eliminate Mgmt 4400 and require one more of the Telecommunication elective courses

Outcome 3 (Knowledge and Skills of Technology) Goals

In order to provide students with current marketable skills, the following recommendations were made based upon changes proposed by the University Council on Teacher Education, advisory committee members, students, and faculty input:

  1. Multimedia Minor and BIS:  Make TBE 2531 an elective
  2. Complete research on Multimedia employment in the State of Utah

Outcome 5 (Preparation Toward Certification/Licensing) Goals

  1. Business Education Major:  Complete proposal to get graduate credit for TBE 3600 (6600), TBE 3610 (6610), and TBE 3100 (6100).  This credit will be used as elective credit for students pursuing a teaching degree and a Master of Education Degree.

Outcome 8 (Teaching and Leadership Skills) Goals

Based upon the need for appropriate assessment tools, the following goal has been set:

  1. The department will keep working with the University Council on Teacher Education to add a section to the student teacher evaluation form unique to Business Education, which will improve the value of this assessment tool.
  2. The department will review the possibility of a PBL student organization assessment.

Outcome 9 (Learning Outcomes Through Community Partnerships)Goals

  1. Business Systems Major: Change TBE 4990 to an internship and eliminate the practicum

Telecommunications and Business Education Outcomes

As a result of the assessment tools, the other five outcomes are working well with no suggestions for revision.  The nine outcomes for graduates of Telecommunications and Business Education are as follows:

  1. Effective business communications skills
  2. Effective computational applications
  3. Knowledge and skills of technology
  4. Implementation of decision-making and problem-solving skills
  5. Preparation toward certification/licensing
  6. Knowledge of ethics and professionalism
  7. Understanding of diversity including international and intercultural issues
  8. Teaching and leadership skills
  9. Learning outcomes through community partnerships
