Telecommunication & Business Education

Results of Assessment

2005-2006 (submitted 10/05/06)

During the year 2005/06, the Telecommunications and Business Education (TBE) faculty completed the following goals from 2004/05 assessment:

  • Added an advanced Web Design/Database course, TBE 3532, with TBE 2532 and TBE 2080 as prerequisites.
  • Changed TBE 3080 to TBE 2080, a lower division course, since the database section of TBE 1700 has been dropped.  The advanced database concepts have been added to TBE 3532.
  • Dropped TBE 3090 from the requirements for Multimedia and Business Systems minors since this course is now partially covered in TBE 1700.
  • Required TBE 2860 (Practicum) or equivalent work experience as a prerequisite to TBE 4990 (Senior Project).
  • Added TBE 2533 as a required course rather than an optional course.

During the year 2005/06, the Telecommunications and Business Education (TBE) faculty reviewed the exit interviews, internship/practicum evaluations, student teaching evaluations, and advisory committee recommendations.  These assessment tools were used to evaluate the nine outcomes for TBE.  Also, several goals were continued from last year’s assessment.  Outcomes 3 and 8 were targeted as the areas needing revision.  Based on these assessment tools, the following goals were suggested for 2006/07:

Overall Department Goal

Based on input from graduating students and faculty, the following goals were set:

1.      Conduct an online survey for the Telecommunications graduates.

2.      Conduct an online survey for Business Systems graduates.

3.      Conduct an online survey for Business Education graduates.

Outcome 3 (Knowledge and Skills of Technology) Goals

In order to provide students with current marketable skills, the following recommendations were made based upon changes proposed by the University Council on Teacher Education, advisory committee members, students, and faculty input:

1.      Business Education Majors:  Add TBE 2080, Databases; and TBE 3090, Presentation Software, to the list of required courses for this major.  This change is based upon reducing 7 credits from the College of Education requirements, which changes from 3 levels to College of Education Core and Student Teaching (2 levels.)

2.   Conduct research on Multimedia employment in the State of Utah.

Outcome 8 (Teaching and Leadership Skills) Goals

Based upon the need for appropriate assessment tools, the following goal has been set:

  1. The department will keep working with the University Council on Teacher Education to add a section to the student teacher evaluation form unique to Business Education, which will improve the value of this assessment tool.

Telecommunications and Business Education Outcomes

As a result of the assessment tools, the other seven outcomes are working well with no suggestions for revision.  The nine outcomes for Telecommunications and Business Education are as follows:

  1. Effective business communications skills
  2. Effective computational applications
  3. Knowledge and skills of technology
  4. Implementation of decision-making and problem-solving skills
  5. Preparation toward certification/licensing
  6. Knowledge of ethics and professionalism
  7. Understanding of diversity including international and intercultural issues
  8. Teaching and leadership skills
  9. Learning outcomes through community partnerships
