Results of Assessment

2004-2005 (submitted 09/21/05)

During the year 2004/05, the Telecommunications and Business Education (TBE) faculty completed the following goals from 2003/04 assessment:

  • Offered courses in a variety of ways to accommodate students’ needs.
  • Revised the business education minor to include courses future teachers would teach in Utah high schools.
  • Revised the business education/marketing minor to include courses future teachers would teach in Utah high schools.
  • Revised the business education major to allow students to apply for the multimedia endorsement from the State Office of Education.
  • Added an advanced image editing course to the business systems major.
  • Reviewed the Praxis II Exam, which is now required of business education majors and business education and marketing minors.
  • Encouraged students to obtain the Cisco certification.

During the year 2004/05, the Telecommunications and Business Education (TBE) faculty reviewed the exit interviews, internship/practicum evaluations, student teaching evaluations, and advisory committee recommendations.  These assessment tools were used to evaluate the nine outcomes for TBE.  Also, several goals were continued from last year’s assessment.  Outcomes 3, 5, and 8 were targeted as the areas needing revision.  Based on these assessment tools, the following goals were suggested for 2004/05:

Overall Department Goal

Based on input from graduating students and faculty, the following goals were set:

1.       Conduct a graduate survey for the telecommunications majors.

Outcome 3 (Knowledge and Skills of Technology) Goals

In order to provide students with current marketable skills, the following recommendations were made based upon advisory committee members, students, and faculty input:

1.      Business Systems Majors:  Add an advanced Web Design/Database course making the current TBE 2532 a prerequisite.

2.      Consider changing TBE 3080 to a lower division course since the beginning database section has been dropped from the TBE 1700 course and include the advanced database content in an advanced Web Design/Database course.

3.      Multimedia and Business Systems Minors:  Drop TBE 3090 from the requirements since this course is now covered in TBE 1700.

4.      Business Systems Majors:  Require TBE 2860 (Practicum) or equivalent work experience as a prerequisite to TBE 4990 (Senior Project).  Add a multimedia course to the required courses.

Outcome 5 (Preparation Toward Certification/Licensing) Goals

Based upon the need to have appropriate certification/licensure assessments, the following goals have been set for this year:

1.      Review the merits of MOUS certification for Business Systems Majors/Minors.

Outcome 8 (Teaching and Leadership Skills) Goals

Based upon the need for appropriate assessment tools, the following goal has been set:

  1. The department will keep copies of student teacher evaluations from the TBE department evaluator.

Telecommunications and Business Education Outcomes

As a result of the assessment tools, the other six outcomes are working well with no suggestions for revision.  The nine outcomes for Telecommunications and Business Education are as follows:

  1. Effective business communications skills
  2. Effective computational applications
  3. Knowledge and skills of technology
  4. Implementation of decision-making and problem-solving skills
  5. Preparation toward certification/licensing
  6. Knowledge of ethics and professionalism
  7. Understanding of diversity including international and intercultural issues
  8. Teaching and leadership skills
  9. Learning outcomes through community partnerships
