Results of Assessment

2004-2005 (submitted 11/14/05)

This past year we assessed items 4 and 5 from our assessment plan (#4 Students should be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills or formulate and defend a thesis in a written or oral format; #5 Students should be able to demonstrate the basic research skills necessary to write a paper in the discipline of political science). These two items were assessed using "embedded assessment." Student papers from the Senior Seminar were evaluated specifically with respect to these two items. This was done separately from the grading of the various papers.

With respect to item # 4 - thesis - just over 50% of the students scored a 4 or higher (on a 5 point scale). With respect to item # 5 - research skills - over 75% of the students scored a 4 or higher.

After assessing all of the outcomes at least once the department met and determined that our assessment outcomes needed to be changed. You can find those changes in an additional file titled "new outcomes."
