Results of Assessment

2001-2002 (submitted 09/27/02)

This past year we assessed items 4 and 5 from our assessment plan. This was done through a qualitative exit interview, where students taking our Senior Seminar were asked how to comment in writing on well they thought the department courses were with respect to these two items. Students were also asked to hand in portfolios. In general, students gave the department an above average rating (approximately an 8 out of 10) on items 4 and 5. The number of papers that were assigned in political science courses was indicated as a major reason for this above average rating. The portfolios were less helpful than the exit interview, given the rather small number of portfolios that were turned in by students. In the future we will need to do a better job of making sure that students turn in portfolios.

For the 2002-2003 academic year we will be assessing items 1 and 6:

1.  Students should have a basic knowledge of the political institutions and processes of the government of the United States.

6.  Students should have a basic knowledge of the content of two of the five subfields within political science: American Government and Public Administration, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Public and Constitutional Law, and Political Theory.
