Physical Education
Teaching Major Outcomes Assessment for 2002-2003:
The Physical Education Major’s Outcomes Assessment model
was revised to meet the new NCATE/NASPE 2001 Initial Physical Education
Standards – fifth edition. The 2001 revised guidelines made a paradigm
shift from “assessment based” system of program accreditation to
“performance-based standards and outcomes” system of accreditation. The ten standards and forty-three outcomes reflect the
consensus among experienced physical educators at all levels as to what a
teacher needs to know, believe, and be able to do.
The standards to be addressed are:
-
Content
Knowledge
-
Growth
and Development
-
Diverse
Learners
-
Management
and Motivation
-
Communication
-
Planning
and Instruction
-

Suggested Revision Process:
1. Spring Semester 2003:
- Two faculty members attended the NCATE/NASPE Reports and Reviewers
workshops at the AAHPERD Convention in San Diego, California, in April.
- The chair, assistant chair of the department , and the physical education
program director will schedule a meeting with each individual faculty member
responsible to participate in the accreditation process.
At this meeting each faculty member will receive a Guidelines Manual,
a description of their responsibilities relevant to assessment/accreditation
and a time-line for work to be completed.
2. Autumn Semester 2003:
- The
NCATE/NASPE assessment report process will be an agenda item at the first
faculty meeting Autumn Semester, where the entire faculty will be brought up
to-date with the work that will take place.
- An
Accreditation/ Assessment committee will be formed composed of the physical
education faculty with the chair of
the department serving as committee chairman.
This committee will meet on a regular basis throughout the semester
to prepare materials for the revised NCATE/NASPE assessment/accreditation
model. This committee will
address curricular changes, data analysis, timelines, materials needed,
document preparation and editing.
- A
rubrics for each standard will be designed providing descriptors of
“target,’ “acceptable.” and “unacceptable” teacher candidate
performance relative to each outcome.
- Evidence
that the candidates meet the criteria at an acceptable level must be
provided through a multitude of assessments. The program report will be judged holistically for the
standards and there must be strong evidence that the standard has been met
know matter how many outcomes are addressed.
- The
report will also include a statement of context, performance data, and
artifacts.
- The
new assessment model for physical education will be designed and made ready
for implementation beginning Fall Semester 2003.
3. Spring
2004:
Using the new model, data will be collected and analyzed,
and results reported.
