PhilosophyResults of Assessment 2001-2002 (submitted 03/29/02) In order to engage in outcomes assessment for philosophy minors, we put into place during the 2002 spring semester an experimental course for senior philosophy minors (Philo 4810). This course consists of two components. The first component is a test over all the major fields of philosophy: history of ancient and early modern philosophy; epistemology and ethics. The second part of the course consists in having the students write analytical papers in response to secondary literature on the topic. The second part is meant to expose students to a type of scholarly writing that is unique to philosophy and to allow them to demonstrate proficiency in writing short analytical papers. Hence, philosophy minors will be able to demonstrate both their competence in a particular subject and their proficiency in a skill that is unique to the discipline. This material will be collected for each student and put into a portfolio that will be kept on file. At this point in the semester (March, 2002), students have completed the content exam and are currently working on their papers. This course will be run again in 2002-2003 (under a different title) and ultimately will be put into the curriculum permanently.
