Results of Assessment

2002-2003 (submitted 10/20/03)

The Music Area outcomes assessment results for 2002-2003 showed the following:

1. The audition process which was begun in the 2001-2002 school year worked fairly well. There are still several students who have fallen through the cracks, but they have been identified and steps are being taken to assure that they are auditioned.

2. Students are still registering for junior and senior recitals and then not completing them in the semester in which they register. Students who do this receive an E for the class. More and better advising of the faculty advisors and private teachers is being planned for the fall semester of 2003.

3. There is a need to revamp the music history sequence to make it work more effectively. The present program of two years consists of one year of survey, followed by one year of literature. The program will be changed to a two year chronologically sequential program. The program will be rewritten during the summer of 2003, by Dr. Bettie Jo Basinger, who presented the revised program outline to the faculty.

General Concerns

1. The music area's most pressing need is a musicologist to effectively teach the major courses in the music history area. This will reach a crisis point after next year when the revised music history sequence takes effect.

2. Recruiting in the wind/brass area is becoming a larger problem. The area doesn't have sufficient quality players in the a number of instruments to allow the programs which depend on it to function well. The faculty and area head are unable to recruit as needed due to the size of their teaching loads.

3. The Music Area faculty is concerned about the Theatre Area's lack of support for the production of a fully staged opera. This will be addressed during the opening meetings of the fall 2003 semester.

Accreditation

NASM has granted the Music Area full continued accreditation for the next 10 years. This has been an ongoing process for the past two years due to a complete change in the music major programs, coupled with the normal NASM accreditation process. Next NASM accreditation is due in the school year 2010-2011.
