Student Outcome #2:

Communicate Effectively Using Oral, Written, Visual & Technological Methods.

Methods Used to Gather Data:

• Student Project Statements, resumes, reports, various types of written submissions
• Project Programs for junior and seniors
• Oral and Visual Presentations for sophomores, juniors & seniors
• Portfolios for sophomores, juniors & seniors

Data Used for Assessment:

• Two-year portfolio Review (Instructor and Professional Evaluations)
• Third & Fourth year portfolio Review (Instructor and Professional Evaluations)
• ACT Work Keys
• Instructor Evaluations
• Graduate Surveys

Assessment Outcomes:

• Criteria for addressing a higher level of writing skills was developed and incorporated.
• Student written assignments are presented visually to class members for critiquing and changes made in class, reworked and submitted to the instructor.
• Students are strongly encouraged to use state-of-the-art software for oral and visual presentations.
• Senior portfolios will be of three to four types: original work, desktop published, CD & web based.
• Professional mentors are assigned to senior students.

Assessment Results: (instructors)

• Written, oral, visual & technological skills have improved. Continuous attention is needed.
• Craftsmanship in visual presentations needs addressing.
• Digital, bitmap imaging & vector drawing address a higher level of technology.
• Basic art courses will improve visual communication

Assessment Results by Professional Designers & Jetway executives, board members & engineers:

• Additional art courses
• Proficiency in hand drafting
• Higher level of craftsmanship for presentation
• Higher level of creativity for visual presentation
• Professional verbiage, Ex. board members "instead of you guys," etc.
• Digital, Photoshop & InDesign software for visual presentation.

FMC Airport Systems (Jetway) Oral & Visual Presentation Evaluation:

• Scale 1-5
• Overall Average = 3.05

Professional Evaluations for Written & Visual Presentations:

Sophomore Class

• Scale 1-5
• Overall Average = 3.03

Junior Class

• Scale 1-5
• Overall Average = 3.3

Senior Class

• Scale 1-5
• Overall Average = 3.58

Changes to Implement:

• Writing skills as a one hour course
• Rework the curriculum
• Change and adhere to prerequisites
• Place emphasis on writing, visualization & technology in studio courses
• Stress the design program & process
