Results of Assessment

2006-2007 (submitted 02/15/08)

The Health Sciences Department has been tracking retention numbers from 2000-2007. The numbers reveal several interesting points, which we are addressing in multiple ways.

(1) Enrollment in the traditional HTHS1110 Fall/1111 Spring offerings peaked in 2004-2005 at 603 students.

(2) Given that peak, we started offering HTHS1110 in the Spring and 1111 in the summer & the following Fall. This raised total enrollment to 860 in the series in 2005-2006. Enrollment has since dropped to 700 in Fall 2007.

(3) Retention was running between 48% and 53% in the traditional Fall Spring offerings.

(4) In the multiple offering model, retention has ranged from 53% to 58%, which is an increase. It suggests that some, students who wait until Spring to enroll are doing better than those students who enrolled in the Fall.

(5) Retention dropped from 61% in 2005-2006 to 54% in 2006-2007. Given this decrease in retention, we are redesigning the laboratory experiences in Spring 2008. The laboratories are scheduled every week, have written homework and more in depth learning experiences. We will be measuring retention rates, exam scores and student satisfaction rates to evaluate the effect of these changes.
