2007 Communication Department
Assessment Report
Executive Summary
During the 2006-07 academic year the
Communication Department has participated in the following assessment
activities:
-
We continued our assessment of the
writing of our senior students by having 15 Comm 4990 final projects
assessed using the Department writing rubric. Results from this assessment
report a continued improvement in student writing since our first effort at
such assessment in 2003.
-
In connection with our interest in
investigating a Communication Department degree Masters program, interest
surveys were sent to 800 former graduates from our department and
approximately 200 paper and online surveys were received. Much of the
information received has department, course and program assessment
implications. We also participated in focus group meetings with Hill Air
Force Base personnel, government employees, non-profit group administrators,
large community businesses and organizations and WSU staff and personnel to
discuss the interest in a post-Baccalaureate degree in Communication from
WSU. Results of both the surveys and focus groups are now being analyzed for
“next step” decisions.
-
Data has also been collected to continue
our investigation regarding student grades and student/teacher
evaluations. Data will be analyzed early in fall semester, 2007.
-
The Communication Department participated
in the A&H pilot Assessment study completed this year. Preliminary results
are available on the WSU Assessment web site.
