CHF - Family Studies

Results of Assessment

2000-2001 (submitted 05/24/02)

Family Studies developed eleven outcome standards for Family Studies Majors based on the National Council on Family Relations standards and minimum requirements for the "Certified Family Life Educator" credential. The following data were collected under selected standards:

A Family Studies Major graduate will have a knowledge base and related skills that address:

1. Internal Dynamics of Families - to be measured by the satisfactory completion of an APA research paper:  20 students completed intensive analyses in correct APA format

2. Human Growth and Development Over the Lifespan - to be measured by the satisfactory completion of  age group interviews:  104 students completed "A" level age group interviews and course application papers

3. Family Resource Management - to be measured by the satisfactory completion of 

a. A consumer complaint letter:  11/12 students wrote an "A" quality letters

b. Personal and family mission statements:  116/118 students completed "A" quality mission statements

c. Personal financial analysis and plan:  106/118 students completed "A" quality plans

4. Ethics - to be measured by the satisfactory completion of

a. Values clarification project:  116/118 students completed "A" quality projects

b. Creation of a personal code of ethics and philosophy paper:  65/65 students completed "A" quality papers

c. Creation of an ethical behaviors teaching plan:  64/65 students completed "A" quality teaching plans

4. Professional Development - to be measured by active participation in professional or student organizations:

  • 15 students joined NCFR

  • 9 students attended the national NCFR conference in November 2000, in Minneapolis, MN

  • 41 WSU students joined the Utah Affiliate Council of NCFR

  • 41 WSU students attended the Utah Council on Family Relations (UCFR) conference on March 30, 2001 at WSU

  • 9 students served as Child and Family Studies Student Organization (CFSSA) officers for 2000-2001.

  • 22 students were active in CFSSA for 2000-2001

GOALS AND PROGRESS

1. WSU was third in the nation with 20 new Conditional CFLEs recognized by the National Council on Family Relations.

2. A three semester major (rather than four) was implemented.

3. To begin Fall Semester, 2001, with Cohort #11, a practicum experience will be required of Family Studies majors.

4. ChFam 3350, "Diverse Families," was offered as a university diversity course.

5. A Portfolio Packet was created to define a student-created outcomes document and distributed to Cohort #11 students Autumn Semester, 2000, and Cohort #12 students Spring Semester, 2001.
