Results of Assessment

2001-2002 (submitted 07/23/02)

1.  What assessment was done, and how were the data collected ?

I wrote three survey forms, based primarily on the program outcomes, for the following three groups:

  • Incoming students 35 received (Up to June 11, 2002)
  • Exiting students 22 received (Up to June 11, 2002)
  • Capstone faculty 32 received (Up to June 11, 2002)

2.  What program outcomes were assessed?

The surveys are based on the following program outcomes:

As a result of completing the course work and capstone thesis, a BIS student should have developed:

1. Knowledge in three disciplinary areas

2. Critical thinking skills

3. Appropriate research skills for one or more disciplines

4. Organizational and time management skills necessary for completing the course work contract and capstone

5. An ability to synthesize three disciplines into an integrated program

6. A plan for the next step, either in a particular career or graduate program.

I also asked other questions, such as greatest challenges in the program, helpfulness of the BIS office, and how the student found out about the program.

3. With whom have you talked about his data?

I have shared assessment information with Nickie Wagner, the BIS secretary, and Kathleen Lukken, the Associate Provost. I will discuss my findings with the BIS Advisory Committee at our next meeting, in Fall 2002.

4.  What changes and adjustments come out of this assessment?

I plan to:

  1. Revisit the outcomes: this year’s assessment process showed me that they do not yet fully and fairly reflect the goals of the program.
  2. Consult the BIS Advisory Board about this year’s assessment for advise and feedback.
  3. Rewrite the survey forms to more clearly reflect the revised outcomes.
  4. Revise the survey forms for greater parallelism, so that I’m asking the same question of incoming and exiting students, as well as capstone faculty. This should lead to a more valid data base and more accurate comparison next year.
  5. Begin assessment of alumni.
