Student Learning Outcome Assessment Procedure When Assessed
Have the competencies delineated in the Music Major General Outcomes. Refer to Music Core Curriculum. Refer to Music Core Curriculum.
Be able to demonstrate performing competence in their major area of study. Juries, recitals, master class. Ongoing.
Juries are held at the end of each semester.
Master Class is weekly as a part of private study.  Recitals are each semester plus final recitals.
Be able to articulate basic knowledge of applicable performance and teaching literature. Repertoire lists, master class. Ongoing.

Student Learning Outcome Assessment Procedure When Assessed
Have the competencies delineated in the Music Major General Outcomes. Refer to Music Core Curriculum Refer to Music Core Curriculum.
Have a working knowledge of music education in the U.S. schools. Written tests Ongoing.
MENC members have access to much information through the Music Educators Journal and state/national conferences.
Be able to articulate a philosophy of music education. Written tests and teaching portfolio At the completion of courses related to the outcome.
Be familiar with standard music curricula, particularly the National Standards for Music Education and the Utah Core Curriculum. Written tests. Teacher Work Samples or Unit Plans, Internships, & Student Teaching At the completion of courses related to the outcome.
Be able to prepare effective lesson plans for music classes and ensemble rehearsals. Teacher Work Samples or Unit Plans, Internships, & Student Teaching, Graduate Survey At the completion of courses related to the outcome. The graduate surveys are sent a year after graduation.
Diagnose and prescribe appropriate content and techniques according to the music learning sequence for all levels and types of learners. Teacher Work Samples or Unit Plans, Internships, & Student Teaching At the completion of courses related to the outcome.

Be able to demonstrate performing competence in their major area of study. Juries, recitals, master class. Ongoing.
Juries are held at the end of each semester.  Master Class is weekly as a part of private study.  Recitals are each semester plus final recitals.
Have a knowledge of pedagogical methods and materials in the appropriate discipline and the ability to evaluate the appropriateness of those methods with respect to individual teaching situations. Oral and/or written report portfolio, internship, graduate survey. At the completion of courses related to the outcome.
Be able to apply appropriate pedagogical knowledge and prepare effective lesson plans in a variety teaching situations. Internship, videotape, graduate survey, portfolio. At the completion of courses related to the outcome.  The graduate surveys are sent a year after graduation.
Be able to establish and articulate a philosophy of music teaching and learning. Written assignments, portfolio, simulated activity. At the completion of courses related to the outcome. 
Demonstrate knowledge, experience and teaching skills for further graduate study in pedagogy or a career in music studio teaching. Portfolio, internship,  graduate survey. At the completion of courses related to the outcome.  The graduate surveys are sent a year after graduation.
Demonstrate competency in evaluating various music software and/or technologies as they relate to pedagogy. Written assignments, oral reports, portfolio. At the completion of courses related to the outcome.
Demonstrate knowledge, skills, and rehearsal techniques of piano accompanying in a variety of settings. Performance evaluation, studio accompanying, concert/convocation evaluation. Ongoing evaluation in performance situations, both in accompanying classes and in recital performance.
Demonstrate knowledge of literature styles and performance practice in the student's major performance area.  Vocal majors will be able to sing in foreign languages. Recitals, juries, master class, graduate survey, recital program notes/paper, written report. Ongoing during and at the end of each semester and during recital performance.  The graduate surveys are sent a year after graduation.
Be able to demonstrate a high quality of performance competence in the student's major area of study. Recitals, juries, master class. Ongoing.

Have the skills and knowledge necessary to prepare for performance independent of outside teaching and assistance. Graduate surveys, recital preparation [process] Recital preparation involves daily practice for private lessons and eventual public performance. The graduate surveys are sent a year after graduation.
Be able to articulate knowledge of applicable performance and teaching literature. Portfolios, notebooks Ongoing each semester.
Have a knowledge of and be able to demonstrate the fundamentals of effective music pedagogy. Written assignments, observations At the completion of courses related to the outcome.
Vocal majors will be able to sing in foreign languages. Juries, recitals, master class Evaluation in language classes.  Evaluation during vocal music juries, recitals, and master classes.

Have the writing skills and ability to conduct research. Performing, composing, writing, and other forms of musical analysis At the conclusion of courses related to the outcome.
Understand and be able to apply music theory, aural skills, and keyboard proficiency. Performing and writing At the conclusion of courses related to the outcome during the first two years of school.
Have a working knowledge of the history affected the development of musical forms and genres. Writing, exams, and other forms of musical analysis At the conclusion of courses related to the outcome during the second and third years of school.
Have a knowledge and understanding of music in its cultural context. Writing, exams, and other forms of musical analysis At the conclusion of courses related to the outcome during the second and third years of school.
Be familiar with music technology in its various forms for teaching, composition, and scholarly pursuits. Participant observation, upper division selected assignments At the conclusion of courses related to the outcome during the first two years of school, and again in the final year for students enrolled in the Music Education courses.
Have a practical knowledge of performance practice in their particular ensemble performing area(s). Performing At the conclusion of performance and pedagogy courses related to the outcome.  These courses are ongoing throughout the students' tenure in the program.
Have a knowledge of repertoire and technical studies in their major area of study. Juries, recitals, other concert performances, master classes Juries are held at the end of each semester. Master Class is weekly as a part of private study. Recitals are each semester plus final recitals. Concert performances are  the equivalent of final exams in performing ensembles.
Use skills of performance, aural analysis, score analysis, improvisation, and composition to solve musical problems. Performing, composing, writing, and other forms of musical analysis At the conclusion of courses related to the outcome.
