Assessment Plan

The Department of Microbiology assessment plan examines student outcomes using a variety of direct and indirect measures as listed below:

Direct Measures

  • Performance on National Standardized Tests (GRE, MCAT, DAT)
  • Laboratory Skills Evaluations in Micro 2054 and Micro 3053
  • Writing skills in upper division courses
  • Speaking skills in upper division courses (standardized evaluation)
  • Group project evaluation in upper division courses
  • Directed Research reports and presentations
  • Grade Point Average (student grades)

Indirect Measures

  • Job Placement/Post-graduation success (feedback form alumni)
  • Graduate and Professional School Acceptance Rates
  • Internships
  • Departmental Exit Survey
  • Course Evaluations
  • Feedback from employers

Schedule of Assessment

Data for both direct and indirect measures will be collected and compiled annually. Analysis of the data will occur the following autumn semester with any needed changes to teaching methodology or curriculum to occur after that analysis.

Assessment of Fundamental Skills

1. Nature of Science and Scientific Inquiry

Measures: Directed research reports and presentations, Exit survey, Student grades

2. Laboratory Skills

Measures: Micro 2045 and Micro 3053 Laboratory skills evaluations, Job placement, Exit survey

3. Critical Thinking Skills

Measures: Writing and speaking skills assessment in upper division courses, GPA. Directed research reports and presentations, Graduate and professional school acceptance, National Standardized Test results (GRE)

4. Problem-Solving Skills

Measures: Performance on National Standardized Tests, Directed research reports and presentations, Job placement, Graduate and professional school acceptance

5. Communication Skills

Measures: Directed research reports and presentations, Writing skills assessment in upper division courses, Speaking skills assessment in upper division courses

6. Cooperation/Social Responsibility

Measures: Internships, Job placement, Graduate and professional school acceptance, Group projects and presentations in upper division courses


7. Computer Skills

Measures: Writing skills assessment in upper division courses (including data analysis), Directed research reports, Departmental exit survey, Course evaluations, Presentations (speaking assessment in upper division courses)

8. Values

Measures: Course evaluations, Departmental exit survey, Instructor Group Evaluation
