Assessment Plan

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME

WHEN ASSESSED

Demonstrate speaking and listening proficiency in the language they are studying. Departmental test administered as a Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview (SOPI), a computer based oral assessment of speaking and listening skills. Results kept on file in Foreign Language Department. Year of graduation
Demonstrate the ability to write in different styles. In required Grammar and Composition course (FL 3060) students write essays in various styles. Assigned essays demonstrate the ability to describe, narrate in the past, use argumentation, etc. Student portfolio must provide at least two appropriate documents. Year of graduation
Demonstrate adequate command of grammar, mechanics and the ability to use a variety of sentence structures to express their ideas. Required and elective courses teach correct grammatical structures and sentence variety. These skills are developed and applied in every upper-division course. At least one document demonstrating these skills will be included in the portfolio. Year of graduation
Read and understand popular literary texts in the language; analyze literary works and discern moral, cultural and aesthetic values. Required literature courses, including Introduction to Literature (FL 3160) and one additional literature course teach these skills. Assignments cover discussions of the values of the culture and the formal analysis of literary form and style. At least one document demonstrating these values is to be included in the portfolio. Year of graduation
Demonstrate an awareness of the similarities and the differences among the cultures of the language being studied as they compare to other cultures. Required and elective literature and culture courses explore cultural comparisons in a variety of ways. At least one document demonstrating a knowledge of such comparisons is to be included in the portfolio. Year of graduation
